Celebration for a Cause: Spa Adriana Re-launch Raises Funds, Awareness for
Huntington Breast Cancer Action Coalition
HUNTINGTON, NY – October 27, 2010 – Celebrating 26 years in Huntington, NY, Aveda lifestyle salon and spa Spa Adriana underwent its own “beauty makeover” recently – a very special eco-focused renovation – and unveiled the gorgeous results at an event benefitting the Huntington Breast Cancer Action Coalition (HBCAC) to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The event raised more than $1,800 for the non-profit.
The event featured live music, hors d’oeuvres and lots of fun for the more than 90 guests in attendance.
“This event meant so much to us. Spa Adriana has always been active in the community, and we were thrilled to be able to help the HBCAC raise money and awareness in the fight against breast cancer as part of our grand re-launch,” said Adriana Vater, who co-founded Spa Adriana with her husband, John, who emphasized the importance of community businesses sticking together. “The success of our community is closely tied with the success of local businesses. So many have graciously donated items for the raffle or have otherwise been involved in this celebration – it is clear that Huntington businesses are committed to the growth and success of the whole community.”
Local Businesses Donate Throngs of local businesses came together to donate their services as well as items for the raffle. Marshs of Huntington donated 10% of all sales from October 10-October 20, 2010 to the HBCAC when customers mentioned the event. Hors d’oeuvres were graciously donated by The Culinary Studio, and sweets were donated by Bon Bons Chocolatier.
Additional participants included Artistic Destination, Aveda, Azuma, Ballroom of Huntington, Blossom, Body & Soul Yoga, Dr. Tangredi, Fado, Francine’s Fashion Boutique, Global Treasures, Kerry St. Ours, Libutti Jewelers, Little Switzerland Dolls, London Optical, Meehan’s of Huntington, Mystic Warrior, Osteria da Nino, Pilates Center of Long Island, Pursuit of Bass Charters, Raphael Vineyards, Rosemary Sharp, Spice Village Grill, Super Runners Shop, The Village Artist, The Water Store, Time Source, Tomo, Village Flowers and Zoe & Company.
A Green(er) Eco-Renovation Spa Adriana’s co-founders have always been passionate about the environment. When it was first designed Spa Adriana featured many of the same “green” building techniques used by the ancient Mayans — dyes were mixed with stucco to color the walls instead of paint, museum-quality Mayan reliefs abound, bubbling waterfalls soothe and relax the spirit.
For the renovation Spa Adriana took this green consciousness even further. Lights in the retail areas have been replaced with low voltage lit displays. Only recycled steel and sustainable materials were used, including Plyboo (bamboo plywood). Additionally man-made cements were utilized as architectural stone for the entire façade of the building, which is not only eco-conscious but adds to the earthy, ancient connection to the Mayan civilization. The Mayan art found throughout Spa Adriana was produced by Dr. Alfonso Moralas, Archeologist and Luis Eschevres, Mayan Architect and Artisan.
All other sourcing of materials, furnishing and all contractors were from Long Island. Raymond Calamari of Arcalhek Architects in Huntington designed the façade. Tony Tanzi of Indian Head Contractors served as general contractor for the construction.
